Poison Control Center, that offers information plus a for-fee, emergency
phone service.
- Best
Friends Animal Sanctuary cares for 1,800 (or more) animals on any
given day. Just north of the Grand Canyon, Best Friends
is the nations largest sanctuary for abused and abandoned companion
and domestic animals. Aside from the hands-on care
they provide, they manage and promote spay/neuter and adoption campaigns
in Utah and other states with a network of cooperating animal rescue
groups. You may have noticed them in the news for their disaster
rescue efforts, such as after hurricane Katrina.
They also publish a bimonthly
magazine for subscribers and contributors. Their extensive Web
site has animal related news, several columns, and seven member-forums
(just sign up). Their content is sometimes funny, sometimes educational,
and timely. Please check them out.
- Furr
Angels! is an extensive Web site (with more than 400 pages) dedicated
to the welfare of cats and dogs with special emphasis on raising awareness
and support for homeless dogs and cats. Their motto is Believe!
You can make a difference. There is much to inform,
entertain, and promote the cause of animals in need. Visit, and
see for yourself.
- In
Memory of Pets. A grief support Web site where you can join
in and share your thoughts.
- Petfinder.org
A GREAT resource for animal rescue groups and adoption searches.
They have a terrific search engine, where you can enter/select your
preferences, to look for that perfect pet and the rescue group that
has him or her. I believe that any shelter or rescue group could
benefit from listing their shelter and animals with Petfinder. They
say that many participants attribute more than half of their placements
to their exposure on Petfinder's Web site. They also
report that pets adopted via Petfinder are returned to the shelter less.
For many organizations, this makes Petfinder the most effective
advertising medium. Since it is FREE, it is certainly the
most valuable.
- PetHobbyist.com
Regardless of whether you have a dog, cat, tarantula, snake,
or horse we have something for you here. They have hundreds
of message boards, chats, events, classified ads, a photo gallery that
you can upload to, and free Windows screensavers. A list
of their forums include several concerning Pet
Loss and Grief Support. Their main Forums
Page has much more to offer in the way of message board topics.
- The Veterinary
Information Network is aimed at Veterinary professionals. They
have moved some of their services to other Web sites. They offer
comprehensive care and medical information for the nonprofessional at
VeterinaryPartner.com.
Their Pet Care Forum message boards have been moved to the PetHobbyist.com
Forums (above).
- VeterinaryPartner.com
They're a GREAT resource and my favorite site for behavioral and
medical information (including specific drug information). They're
referenced above in the Veterinary Information Network listing, their
"parent site."
"Whatever you're looking for, if it's information that will make
